HMS Duke of York was a British battleship laid down in 1937, launched in February 1940, and commissioned in the Royal Navy in 1941. The total length of the ship was 227 m, width 31.5 m, and her full displacement - about 42,100 tons. The battleship's maximum speed was around 28-29 knots. The main armament at the time of the launch was 10 356 mm guns in two turrets with four guns and one twin turret. The secondary armament consists of 16 133 mm guns, 48 40 mm AA cannons and 6 20 mm cannons.

HMS Duke of York was the third of five King George V-class battleships. These battleships were the first, after 1918, in which British designers no longer had to pay attention to the disarmament routes, especially the London route of 1930. They were also built for planned clashes with Italian battleships in the Mediterranean, German battleships in the North Sea and - especially - Japanese battleships in the Far East. As a result, ships with strong artillery armament, especially medium artillery, and above all with powerful armor, were created. The battleship HMS Duke of York was built at the John Brown and Company shipyard in Clydebank. The battleship, shortly after entering service, operated in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea, covering allied convoys headed for the USSR. In December 1943, he took part in the Battle of the North Cape, during which he was instrumental in sinking the Scharnchorst. In 1944, the unit underwent modernization, in the course of which modern - for those times - radar equipment was added to the battleship. It was planned that HMS Duke of York would be directed to the Pacific, but the unit did not arrive there until late July 1945 and did not take part in the fighting in the Far East, but represented the British flag at the signing of Japan's unconditional surrender. HMS Duke of York remained in the line until 1949, with its permanent withdrawal in 1951.
