HMS Beagle was one of over a hundred of the Cherokee-class brig-sloops. Launched in 1820, Britain was not currently at war with anyone, so she "lay in ordinary," without masts or sails, until 1826 when she was refit as a survey bark. In 1831, HMS Beagle would go down in history as Captain Robert FitzRoy and the gentleman naturalist Charles Darwin surveyed South America and the South Pacific. Darwin would later publish the book "The Voyage of the Beagle" and his research on this trip would lead to "Origin of the Species". This 1/96 scale model of HMS Beagle builds to an impressive 38.5cm long and 29.8cm tall.
